the "brush program" therapy

Many kiddos with CHARGE have serious sensory issues...textures, temperatures and tastes. These can certainly be overwhelming and impact daily activities.

Through a lot of therapy (we started it in the hospital), Maxwell has overcome a lot of his sensory issues. However, his feet are as sensitive as ever and it definitely impacts his walking. And it seems to have even worsened...when I carry him into the school's sensory room, he immediately draws his feet to his chest.

So his Occupational Therapist started us on a new therapy program. The simple term for it is the "brush program." I brush him rigorously (sounds mean, but it doesn't hurt) all over -- back, arms, hands, legs and feet. Then I do joint compressions after each brushing session. This is supposed to be done every two hours for the next two weeks, and then we reevaluate his progress.

I thought it might be a fun idea for Max to brush his favorite stuffed animal. (By the way, thanks Drew & Steph for this super cute doggy! This is the first stuffed animal he has showed interest in...he loves hugging it and playing with his crinkly ears!)

Hmm, this sure has a weird texture. Wonder why Mommy keeps brushing me with it?

Aaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!

Here you go doggy, I'll brush you and work on your sensory issues.

Soooo sweet, Maxwell. Now both you and the doggie will have your hair brushed....but the doggie has no curls.

Love you!

we have a little boy in my sons kindergarden class who is ADHD and when he gets all wound up, we take him to the back room and use this exact kind of brush all over him...it totally calms him down and he loves it! :)

Eva has the same issues, its funny how she will touch things most people wont but when it comes to normal things she will not touch them.
Keep it up Max and mommy!!
