shopping trip

So today we attempted to make a quick trip to the mall. I was needing a few things and hoping that Maxwell would cooperate.

However, recently he has decided he does NOT like entering the stores...he only wants to walk the halls. With some encouragement, I got him to follow me into one but within a minute he was crying. Then he started to hold his breath...turn pale and purplish...and then collapse a bit. Hard to explain, but it definitely doesn't seem "ok." He did this the other day too when crying. And when I pick him up to console him, he feels extremely limp...it's almost like he is passing out.

It may very well be just a typical kid thing...but something about it worries me. I immediately called his cardiologist, but he wasn't working today. Hopefully we will hear back tomorrow. I have a feeling he will say we should do a halter monitor again and try to get him in an "episode."

Needless to say, no shopping completed today...but plenty of worrying. Hmmm....

Larry (my hub) used to do that as a kid... I guess even as an infant. So yes, it's "normal", but I would always double check out "normal" with Mr. Max. It could be he is just a 2 year old stinker!

Alex sometimes does that if he is crying really hard. I think it's an airway thing, there's a lot to coordinate if you're screaming your lungs out KWIM? He definitely can turn himself purple, it has gotten better as he has gotten bigger/older, for him it is not heart related.

I'm worried too! Ben does this and he has done this his whole life, but never to the point of being limp. Hopefully it is nothing more than Max showing his determination, but keep us posted.

Oh, poor baby, you will be okay. Hopefully it is just a stage he is going through. We will pray for your little guy. Hope everything works out. We love you both.

Love,
Diane and Alexandra

i babysat for a little boy who used to do that. "breath-holding" kids will get themselves so worked up they'll actually hold their breaths, often to the point of passing out (either when they're upset about not wanting to do something, or if he fell and hurt himself a little he would do it then, too) His mom used to tell me, as strange as it sounds, to blow in his face if he ever started. it would force him to take a breath of air, and calm him down at the same time. so, yeah...it's normal :)

Evan turns colors when he cries really hard too. He holds his breath and makes these wierd gaspy swallowing noises that put tons of air in his stomach. He hasn't ever gone limp though (and we don't have the heart issues involved either). I usually chalk the crying up to being 2 or frustration of not being able to communicate...the air gulping to swallow issues in general. It is a lot to coordinate. I think you are doing the wise and cautious thing by consulting with the cardiologist, Dr. Amy.
