amazing costco experience!

Not even sure how to adequately relay our experience yesterday, but I'll try...because it was a magnificent, unforgettable moment.

We're walking through Costco, and Max was taking over the place as usual. It was just a quick trip to get some candy for our Egg Hunt Party next weekend (so excited!)...and sure enough, Max was made it momentus as usual!

So we are walking, and I turn around to get Max's attention to catch up (he LOVES to explore!). He is just standing there with a silly lil' grin. He then signed "peanut butter" to me and lit up like it was Christmas morning.

I was confused...why in the middle of Costco would he ask for peanut butter?

Then I look back, and sure enough there was a huge display of JIF peanut butter (our favorite brand) at the end of the aisle!!! He was VERY excited to enjoy his favorite snack. I cannot tell you how stinkin' cute it all was!!! Peanut butter is a very common sign for him, but to see him use it out in public was totally different and incredible. Wow.

But then I had the task of explaining we couldn't enjoy peanut butter right then. Eeks. I actually thought about buying one and opening it up right there...but I didn't have a spoon, didn't want to use my fingers that had touched the shopping cart, etc. Then I remembered I had tucked away a few *emergency* cookies (Mommy's intuition is amazing, isn't it?) and that held him off for a few minutes.

We start walking and once again Max stopped to explore. He takes everything in...it's so funny. Anyway, so I look over and what a sweet sight. Maxwell had stopped to look at the beautiful flowers and was gently touching them. I walk over to him and he signs "flower" with no prompting. Whoa, now my heart is completely filled with pride AGAIN. This time I decide I need to get a few photos...these are amazing moments that need to be captured!

I sit down beside him and we are talking/signing about the flower and then you could tell he was having a "light bulb" moment. I think he realized he had my full attention again and perhaps this was the perfect opportunity to ask for the peanut butter...again. Oh my gosh, it was so endearing. He got this sweet lil' grin and signed it over and over again. Wow, is this kiddo growing up or what? He may not speak verbally, but he certainly is learning to communicate. And I could not be more proud.

How cute is he checking out the flowers? Perhaps he wants to get some for his Mommy? :)

He was signing "flower" (I think) but I caught him at a weird moment.

I love, love, love this adorable and serious expression. He was signing "cookie" after once again asking for peanut butter.

Max--I love your "Ah-ha!" moment. Your communication is impressive! Evan learned how to climb up on our bed all by himself this weekend (I'm telling you--Max is the linguist and Evan is the athlete!). I would LOVE it if Evan would sign something when we were out and about.

Seriously...could this boy be any cuter? I am so proud of him! Now...if only Jayna could get over her darn Peanut allergy...these two could be up to their ears in peanutbutter together!

So great to read this! What a beautiful post. I remember when Cameron stopped on a walk when he was little to notice flowers for the first time - that there was a world beyond. So many great strides made for Mighty Max.

Max, your mommy is right, you are too stinkin' cute!! You mommy is going to have to lock you up to keep all the girls away from you in a few years! :-)

Congratulations on the spontaneous communication--that is HUGE!

I don't know about Costco, but at Sam's Club, Saturdays are free sample days. You might want to check that out - the samples are bite size and what an adventure that would be!

He's so darling. I hope he got some PB. :-)

Hi Amy,

I know I told you this earlier, but I needed to say it again. I am truly happy for you. What a feat and Mr. Max just keeps amazing me everytime I see him. Give Max a big hug for me.

Also, I wanted to tell you that after playgroup on Monday, Ray got into the car and started to tell me how impressed he was with Max too. He said that they had played together and Ray was just blown away with all of Max's recent accomplishments. Max is truly one incredible little man.

Maxwell,

I never see a jar of Jiff peanut butter without thinking of you. I love the last picture with you and the flowers. I made it my screen saver. I am sure were you to take those flowers you would give them to Mommy. Your mother is amazing. The two of you are incredible.

I love you,
"Auntie" Mary
