Recently on our CHARGE list, there has been a lot of discussion on the comments we get about our children's "CHARGE" ears and what we should do to "fix" them...i.e. "What is wrong with his ear? You can get that fixed, you know."
Many parents said they weren't sure what to say in response to people's comments, so one very clever mom came up with some pretty darn good one-liners. Thought I'd share...they certainly made me giggle. :)
1) Yes, if he lives through another open-heart surgery, the upcoming subaortic stenosis repair, we might look into that. (wow them with big words)
2) Well, they gave us a choice between heart surgery to save his life, or plastic surgery to make him pretty - we chose life.
3) What are you talking about? We had that ear made special!! It's the latest fad!!
4) Yes, but you see, we are auditioning him for the Lord of the Rings.
5) Well, we are of the mindset that God doesn't make mistakes. What do you think?
6) Do you have any idea how many times I've heard that? Believe me, we have plenty of other things to worry about right now.
7) We are suffering enough without comments like that, thank you.
8) No speaka English.
9) (act like you had not noticed) What??? Oh, my God!! Honey, what happened to your ear?? Someone call 911, quick!!!!
10) (flick your child's ear and say, very casually) Well, you get what you get and you don't throw a fit.
11) I tell him all the time if he keeps telling lies his ear will continue to grow out like that, but he just doesn't listen.
12) You know, he can hear you.
13) (or if he can't hear, pretend that you can't either and start signing to the person, pointing to their nose and making gestures that imply how big it is, start laughing uproariously, then walk away shaking your head)
14) Oh, are we pointing out each other's flaws now?
15) You know they also have surgeries available to fix your face.
16) Yes, he's a rather funny-looking little guy. I'm thinking of trading him in for a different model? You interested?

People never cease to surprise me.
My daughter was born with a harmless small abnormality of her right ear.(it looks like someone took a chunk out of her lobe)I didn't once think -Oh!no off to surgery for you. I thought she was unique and just saw her for the beautiful little baby that she was, and i was sure to be taking home the correct baby(no mix ups with her ear). Anyway that was one of the first comments people made, you know you can have that fixed. I think I will allow my adult daughter make that decision herself. It still amazes me that we try with hairstyles, tattoos, fashion to be different from everybody else, but if we don't fit into this "perfect" idea that people have of us we should be forced to look at cosmetic surgery.
I loved the responses by the way...

Those are to funny I love 2, 5, 11 were my favorites. I had not even noticed anything different about Mr. Max's ears. His smile and beautiful eyes have had me from day one. Your are precious just the way you are Max.

Loved these responses; thanks for sharing.
My son was an identical twin....his one ear is mishapen due to laying against his brother in utero. Sadly, we lost his brother when I was eight months pregnant. My son (now 16) has always said he loves his ear...it is the one thing he has that is uniquely his and his brothers....it is his reminder of his lost 'half'....he would never change it...
How callous some people can be! UGH...
We love Maxs ears...and every other little part of him! :)

I particulary like 13! I will have to remember it when out with my daughter and her best friend (who is in wheelchair with spina bifida). I never noticed how careless and mean people could be until Caitlyn found her wonderful friend. Once we were parking at the Mall for a mother/daughter shopping trip, an old man yelled at us for parking in the handicapped parking spot. Boy, did he look surprised when we got the wheelchair out and he saw a girl with braces and canes getting in her wheelchair. I wish people would think before they talked. What happened to our courtesy filter? Max is adorable!
Loved the list. I need to share the one I'd like to use when someone asks me if the hearing aids Cameron wears help him:
"No, they are $3,500 ear fobs, we just like the way they look!"
Of course I really use the question as an opportunity to explain that any time you see someone with hearing aids, they have them because they get some benefit - even if only for sound awareness.
Thanks for posting the list!

When kids teased me about my dad's profession (he worked in the school, so everyone knew him), my friend taught me to say "Thank you, Master of the Obvious!" It's a great response to the uncreative lines such as "You're fat", and "Your dad's the Janitor." Love the CHARGE lines, of course I love anything saracastic!
Yeah people can be rude but I love her comments, now just to have enough nerve to say them...LOL!!

my response of lately when total strangers speak negatively of C's medical issues is this
He'll get that fixed right after you get a personality transplant.
Shuts them up every time.
I'm beginning to question why God has allowed these people to be on my planet. Sorry. It just bugs me when people speak negatively of something they have no comprehension of.
I would love to see the persons reaction if you told someone this! That will teach them!

I also have a sense of humor and find alot of the responses funny, but how I commend you all for not slapping someone right up side the head. lol. People never cease to amaze me.

It's unbelievable how rude people can be! I've never noticed anything with Max's ears, the only thing I noticed is what a handsome young man he is!!
That's awesome! I'm going to have to remember some of those.
Oh Amy, you are so funny and cute. Keep up the good work. I love all them all. I am still laughing.
Ear, never noticed a thing wrong with his ears. I can't get past that precious face and hair.
Oh well, takes all kinds to make a world.

Amy,
These responses are great! I just can't imagine someone saying anything, people just don't use their brain sometimes or think before they say something.

People suprise me every day with how self centered and uncaring they are. I love those Mother's coments... they are great...
These children are all perfect, it the un-perfect people that can't see that....

Amy,
I love that you posted these. They gave me such a good laugh when I read them on the list. Of course it's fine to put Tate'site on Max's blog. That's so thoughtful of you.
Ibet Max loves his new swing. Mike made Pey one and he loves it!
Blessings,

I have held Maxwell and watched him sleep in my arms. I never noticed his ear. I was in awe of how beautiful he is – his beautiful smile, big brown eyes, curls, etc. I was so happy to get to hold him. I wish I could hold him and kiss him daily. Those people with tunnel vision think they are so smart. There is a whole world out there that they are missing out on. My favorite response is #15) You know they also have surgeries available to fix your face.
