cedie update

Cedie has been on my mind all day today and I was incredibly grateful that her mom, Jennifer, returned my phone call tonight.

Unfortunately there has been little progress in her status, and of immediate concern is that her brain is beginning to swell. There is a slight chance the swelling could subside, but even then, they don't know the extent of the brain damage from the lack of oxygen on Sunday night.

Her family is extremely upset, confused and heartbroken. They are being asked whether or not they want her resuscitated should something happen again. This has to be one of the most difficult decisions a parent has to make, and of course they are very torn.

Please keep the Mock family in your prayers...they deeply appreciate everyone's love and concern.

I just read her blog a couple days ago about what a great Christmas she had, and saw her enjoying herself so much in all the pictures, so I couldn't believe the news today when Sarah posted on the CHARGE list. This kind of news is so hard. I'll be praying for her and her family. If you hear more, please keep us updated.

charge syndrome

CHARGE syndrome is a recognizable (genetic) pattern of birth defects which occurs in about one in every 9-10,000 births worldwide. It is an extremely complex syndrome, involving extensive medical and physical difficulties that differ from child to child. The vast majority of the time, there is no history of CHARGE syndrome or any other similar conditions in the family. Babies with CHARGE syndrome are often born with life-threatening birth defects, including complex heart defects and breathing problems. They spend many months in the hospital and undergo many surgeries and other treatments. Swallowing and breathing problems make life difficult even when they come home. Most have hearing loss, vision loss, and balance problems which delay their development and communication. All are likely to require medical and educational intervention for many years. Despite these seemingly insurmountable obstacles, children with CHARGE syndrome often far surpass their medical, physical, educational, and social expectations.
